Anna Bertha (b. 15 Jul 1904 - other twin died at birth); James Lawrence: and Leonard Edward (b. 17 Mar 1906-26 Apr 1968). Sander married Olga Vick. They had 4 children: Correne, Marilyn, Sander, Jr. and Phillip. Sander is buried in Minneapolis, MN. Anna married Floyd W. Lawrence and lived in California. Anna and Floyd had 2 children. Anna died of complications of diabetes. James married a Kavnaugh and had 1 daughter, Jennifer. John never married. He died in the 1980’s of complications of diabetes. Leonard married Hazel Forde (see L. Ottney story). Leonard and Hazel had 5 children: Neva, Lyle, Marvel, Donna and Edward. Carolina and John divorced after a number of years. Carolina died in 1939 and is buried in the Big Canoe Cemetery.

Nothing is known of Louis.

Julia married Julius Peterson in 1896 (see Julius Peterson story). They had 2 daughters; Ida Caroline and Petra Olivia. Ida married Sylvester Wise (see Sylvester Wise story). Julia died Jan 1899 of tuberculosis.

It is not known when Ole Kjerland died or where he is buried. He is not listed in the 1900 census. Isabel died 20 Sep 1909 at the home of her son Olai in Pleasant Twp. She is buried at the Canoe Ridge Cemetery. Her grave is not marked.

Andrew Kjome and Clausine Clauson Kjome 50th anniversary

Andreas “Andrew" Kjome was born 13 Dec 1866 in Highland Twp to N.N. Kjomme Jr. and Johanna H. Bakke. His mother died before he was two years old and his father soon remarried. Andrew was confirmed by Rev. Stub 3 Jul 1881 at Big Canoe. In March 1882, diphtheria took the lives of many children in their neighborhood. Andrew survived the epidemic but 4 of his siblings died within 11 days of each other.

In 1882-83, Andrew attended the Luther Prep School in Decorah. His father hoped that one of his sons might enter the Ministry, but Andrew was more interested in horses and the new technologies. On 27 Nov 1885 he married Clausine Clauson, born 19 Nov 1868, daughter of Ole Clauson and Berit Kristoffersdtr Gresli of Waterloo

Twp, Allamakee Co. They moved to Decorah to a farm east of town at the end of the Palisades Road belonging to his uncle and aunt, Andrew and Berith Nelson.

About 1896, Andrew’s father gave him 120 acres in Section 15, Highland Twp. Andrew had a way with horses and there were often as many as 25 at one time in his corral. The children never knew if the horses he left with would be the ones that came home. Andrew and his cousin, Gilbert Anderson, traveled around the countryside as adjustors for a Norwegian insurance co. Upon returning home they would entertain the family with anecdotes in the dialects of the farmers they had visited. Andrew, Christian Walhus. and Pete Wermager owned a steam engine and threshing machine and hired out to help with harvesting. Andrew also had a well drilling rig and was acquainted with the use of explosives. In the 1920's he was involved with drilling for oil at Bakke No. 1, on his cousin’s place. Andrew was a loving and generous man.

During the flu epidemic in 1918, Andrew traveled daily to his brother John’s farm south of Spring Grove to nurse him, to bring food for the family, and help with the farm work. He also bought all the medicines for the community and delivered them since there was usually no way for most of the families to get to town. In 1922, Andrew and Clausine moved to Clay Hill Farm north of Decorah on the Locust Road.

It was time for George and Gladys to go to high school. In the spring of 1925, they moved to North Street in Decorah. Andrew was employed by Luther College as a carpenter and groundskeeper. He planted flower beds, and mowed grass and plowed snow with his team of horses, Tony and Nobby. When C.K. Preus Gym was built, he and George were on the building crew. Many stories could be told about his antics with his team during the building of the gym. Their home was a gathering place for their extended family, and rooms were let to Luther students as well as to others in need of housing.

An accident while blowing up stumps left Andrew with diminished health. He developed cancer of the intestines and had one of the early successful colostomy operations. But the insurance he had believed had been paid for several years by Luther College had not been paid and his economic situation became very difficult. He was no longer able to do the work at the college so he became supervisor of the city toolhouse. He lived for five years after his operation, being of unusual strength and stamina. While at work he stepped from a table down onto a slab and fell backward against the table, injuring his back. He was taken to his home where he died at 3:30 pm, 6 Apr 1938. Clausine and their daughter Mabel, moved to an apartment above a store in downtown Decorah, and rented out the house on North St. Clausine fell and broke her hip and suffered a minor stroke. On 25 Mar 1948, Clausine passed away. Clausine and Andrew are buried in the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.

Their children were: Nils Olav (died age 3); James H.; Johanna (m. Henry Bjorgo); Mabel A.; Cora (m. Roy Ramlo); Olga (m. W.T. “Duff" Symonds); Norman K.; George B.; and Gladys M. “Kaija" (m. W.F. Gillies).
